One of my favorite moments as a travel advisor isn't booking the vacation...
It's hearing how families revealed the surprise.
Whether you're planning a first visit or returning to your favorite castle, the reveal can become one of those treasured family memories that gets talked about for years. From simple surprises to elaborate scavenger hunts, here are some of my favorite Disney vacation reveal ideas.
Let the Travel Package Do the Revealing
If you're patient enough...
Wait until your travel package from your advisor arrives.
Inside are travel documents, luggage tags, planning information, and everything your family needs for the adventure ahead.
Hand your child the package and simply say,
"This came for you."
Watching them slowly realize they're heading to Walt Disney World is priceless.
Pro Tip: If you're trying to keep the trip a secret until the last minute, let your advisor know! They can be extra careful with emails, phone calls, and mailed materials.
Matching Disney Shirts
This is one of the easiest - and most wearable - reveals.
Order matching Disney shirts for everyone.
Wrap them individually and ask everyone to open them together.
Once everyone is wearing Mickey, Minnie, or their favorite characters, announce:
"You'll need those where we're going..."
Extra fun:

The Disney Surprise Box
Fill a large box with Disney magic:

This is one of my absolute favorite Christmas surprises.
Instead of ornaments...hang everyone's MagicBand on the tree with their name!
When they find them, ask:
"Why do you think Santa brought these?"
It takes a few seconds...
Then the excitement begins.
Disney Treasure Hunt
Turn the reveal into an adventure. Leave clues around the house.
For example:
Where we brush our teeth...
Leads to the bathroom.
Next clue:
Somewhere we watch movies...
Eventually they discover a suitcase or Mickey plush with the final clue:
Pack your bags... We're going to Disney!
Movie Night Reveal
Tell everyone it's family movie night.
Serve:
Popcorn
Mickey ice cream bars (or make your own)
Mickey-shaped snacks
Start a Disney movie...
Pause it halfway through.
Instead of pressing Play...press play on a video announcing:
"We're going to Disney!"
Even better if you capture the reaction on video.
Airport Surprise
Some families keep the secret until departure day.
Wake everyone up early and simply say:
"Get dressed - we have somewhere to be."
Don't tell them.
Drive toward the airport.
When they ask where you're going...Smile.
Some parents don't reveal it until they see the airport departure board.
Others wait until they arrive at the Disney gate at the airport. I have been able to get them all the way to the gate and then let the flight attendant tell them where they're going. Everyone around us on the plane enjoyed being part of the surprise!
Mickey Cookie Reveal
Bake or buy Mickey-shaped cookies.
Decorate them with icing that says:
See You Soon!
Pack Your Bags!
Mickey Is Waiting!
We're Going to Disney!
Sweet and memorable.
Puzzle Reveal
Upload a photo of Cinderella Castle to a custom puzzle company.
As the family finishes the puzzle...the castle appears.
Then they notice the words:
"We're Going to Disney!"
A New Backpack or Suitcase
Give each child a brand-new backpack.
Inside:
Disney poncho
Mickey ears
Disney pins
Water bottle
Autograph book
Disney gift card
Sunglasses
At the very bottom, a note that says: "These are for our Disney vacation!"
Let Mickey Deliver the News
Write a personalized letter "from Mickey Mouse."
It might say:
Hi, friends! Minnie and I heard you'll be visiting us very soon. We can't wait to see you! See ya real soon!
Seal it in a special envelope for an extra magical touch.
Build a Mini Diorama (This one is my personal favorite!)
If you enjoy crafting, a handmade diorama can become part of the gift itself - and even a keepsake years after the surprise has been revealed.
One Christmas, I created a diorama and transformed the box into a tiny piece of Walt Disney World. Cinderella Castle and Main Street U.S.A. stood in the background with Mickey and friends in the foreground. It was simple but effective! The moment the kids recognized the castle, they realized they were going to Walt Disney World.
The best part wasn't just the surprise. It was watching them take in each little detail before the realization finally hit. Those few seconds of curiosity turning into excitement are memories I'll treasure forever.
Visual Idea: Think of it as a miniature movie set inside a shoebox. Use printed scenery for the background, craft moss or green felt for grass, tiny trees or topiaries, miniature props that hint at the destination, and perhaps a hidden note tucked inside that says, "Pack your bags... you're going to Walt Disney World!"
Don't Forget to Capture the Moment
No matter how you reveal your Disney vacation, try to record it. Set your phone up discreetly or have another family member film from across the room. Years from now, you'll cherish those genuine smiles, shocked expressions, and happy tears just as much as the vacation photos themselves.
